All-Star Ingredients: Winter Citrus

At CHEF iQ, we like to work with peak-season ingredients. Not only do they pack a punch in our recipes, but it also gives them a seasonal twist. When the weather turns colder, we like to add flair to our menu items with flavorful citrus. Citrus season occurs during the winter months, so there’s no better time to warm up our meals with these fruits.

Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, and limes all pack a ton of vitamin C. This vitamin is crucial to boosting immune strength, which we definitely need during the chilly winter when people are more prone to illness. One of the easiest ways to introduce more citrus into your diet is to give many of your dishes a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice. Not only will you be getting some good nutrients, but you’ll also be brightening up the flavor of your dish. A little acidity goes a long way, especially on meaty braises or in your favorite bowl of chicken noodle soup!

Grapefruit and oranges are incredible fruits to introduce into your diet. You can eat grapefruit raw for breakfast with a sprinkle of sugar to help cut the tartness. As for oranges, the possibilities don’t just end at fresh-squeezed OJ. Both of these citrus fruits are fantastic in savory dishes, like salads, salsas, and sauces, as well as cocktails and cakes. We highly recommend making candied orange and grapefruit slices. They make for an amazing treat and can be used as a garnish for many different desserts.

If you’re lucky enough to live where citrus is grown, be sure to shop locally! Go out and squeeze the day with some citrus!
