Happy Hour: The Great Northern

This sweet and tangy cocktail is sure to warm up your winter happy hours. The crisp flavor of Aquavit and the sugary honey syrup pair beautifully to make this beverage an instant cold-weather classic.

The Great Northern  
Makes 1 cocktail 

Ingredients:

Honey Simple Syrup:

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup warm water

Great Northern:

  • Ice cubes & crushed ice
  • 2 oz Aquavit or vodka
  • 3/4 oz Lillet Blanc
  • 1/2 oz Cointreau
  • 3/4 oz lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz honey simple syrup
  • Orange or grapefruit slices, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. For the simple syrup: Combine the honey and warm water in a squeeze bottle or plastic container. Shake until the honey is dissolved into the water. (You will have more syrup than needed for one cocktail, but it will keep, covered and refrigerated, for up to 1 month.)
  2. For the Great Northern: Fill an old-fashioned glass with crushed ice and reserve. In a cocktail shaker, add 3 ice cubes, 2 oz. Aquavit, 3/4 oz. Lillet Blanc, 1/2 oz. Cointreau, 3/4 oz. lemon juice, and 1/2 oz. honey simple syrup. Shake well to combine and pour into the reserved old-fashioned glass.
  3. Garnish with orange or grapefruit slices and enjoy!
