Appealing Ways to Repurpose Apple Scraps
When you’re through baking with apples, don’t toss your scraps away. The skin and core can have a repurposed apple-ly ever after. When life gives you apple peels, make the following treats!
Roast a Tasty Snack
For a sweet and healthy afternoon snack, toss apple peels with melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon, and roast or dehydrate them until they are crispy. Use your leftover skins from a Gala or Pink Lady for a sugary taste.
Take Time for Tea
If hot beverages are more your cup of tea, boil the apple cores, peels, and a cinnamon stick in a pot of water for five to seven minutes. Let them steep for about ten minutes, strain, and top the tea off with a little honey. If you use a deep red apple, like a Red Delicious, your drink will take on a beautiful pink hue.
Create a Versatile Vinegar
To make homemade apple cider vinegar, mix 1 cup of apple scraps, 4 cups of water, and 1/4 cup of sugar in a large container. Cover with a paper towel secured with a rubber band, and let it sit in a cool, dark place. After four to five weeks, it should take on the color of apple juice and smell tart and vinegary. Strain out the scraps, and you’re set to use the vinegar in your favorite salad dressings, desserts, and tangy treats. Braeburn and McIntosh apples are excellent selections for repurposed scraps.
